Creating a safe environment for your home is important. Everyone wants to believe that emergencies and accidents can't happen to them, but that's not always true. Your home is probably the biggest investment you've ever made and losing it would be devastating even if you are insured. Simple home safety preparation ensures that you have what you need on hand to protect you and your family if and when the need arises. Utilizing tools like home security systems, fire detectors and extinguishers, and first aid kits could save your life and protect the value of your home.

Safety Tips for Colorado Homes

Many homeowners don't have security systems because of the perceived cost. Though there are very expensive, high-end security systems out there, there are plenty of cheaper options. Brands like Eufy and Arlo are just as efficient in deterring burglars and are typically easier to use. You should also prepare your home in case of a fire. Consider installing several smoke detectors on each floor of your home to make sure you are monitoring the air at all times. Anywhere you have a smoke detector you should also install a carbon monoxide detector. Make sure to test these devices and change out their batteries every six months.

Fire extinguishers are also very important tools to protect your family and home against fires. Remember to keep these where they can be accessed easily and one should be on each floor. Most extinguishers last between five and fifteen years. Check the tag on your extinguisher for dates and instructions. If your fire extinguisher has a gauge, it should be checked every month to make sure it is properly charged. Aside from detectors, alarms, and extinguishers, having an exit plan is also important. Make sure to practice your plan with the entire family. Don’t forget to have safety ladders available in case you need to exit from the second story.

No one is perfect and accidents do happen, especially if you have small children. To prepare for unexpected burns and scrapes, you should have a fully stocked first-aid kit on hand. An ideal kit will have various sizes and types of bandages, gauze/tape, antibiotic ointments, cleaning pads, ice packs, gloves, splints, and pain relievers for all ages. Kits will vary from family to family, depending on their needs. If you have severe allergies, keep an extra epi-pen in your kit just to be safe. Thinking about possible disasters can be stressful and implementing these safety tips will give you a lot of peace of mind.
